Summer supernova

i never really liked summer
it was always too hot for my liking
that time with the sun
would just burn
my ultra-sensitive skin
but staying
in my room was never an option
the sun and i
would always have to meet
every single day
of that unfortunate season

this year, however,
i met you instead
on the fourth
the hottest day of the decade
the moment i saw your
blinding smile
i realized that you’re the star
way closer than the sun
who came to my life
to burn it
made me so
tan to a shade i dislike so much

yet i let you do so
let your rays shine
through the walls of my room,
my dark sanctuary
the light, blinding as your smile
bothered me even as i sleep, but still
i let you do so
because you knew my heart
was in winter and that
i couldn’t keep it from freezing
even in forty degrees

i never really liked summers
but i wished this one lasted
and i thought it would
but this summer didn’t
